Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Vulcan offense gets in gear with 4-2 win over 'Cats

NAMPA, Idaho—After two tough losses and a scoreless tie, the Hawai`i Hilo women's soccer team took their frustrations out on Central Washington, scoring four times to claim a 4-2 verdict in their final match of a long road trip.

The Vulcans now return home, after matches in northern California and Idaho, with a 1-2-1 mark. Central Washington leaves Idaho at 2-2.

Four different Vulcans scored on the afternoon as UHH doubled their previous scoring output through their first three matches. Annie Brejc, Brenna Rill, Camille Strazzo and Nanea Wall all found the net during a game where UH Hilo's offense came together.

The four goals equals UH Hilo's highest scoring output since putting up six scores on Chaminade back in 2012.

"Our defense has been solid and we have been close on offense," said Vulcan head coach Gene Okamura. "It was nice to get the offense going today and head home on a positive note."

Today's match, played on the neutral site field at Northwest Nazarene, began in a way that Okamura had seen earlier this week.

Central Washington scored first in the 20th minute, and the Vulcans didn't even get a shot off for the 27 minutes of the match.

But they broke through at 28:39 when junior transfer Brejc (South Lake Tahoe CC) took a pass from Jodi Lillie to tie the match at 1-1. That's how the scoreboard would still read at the half, with the Wildcats holding a 6-3 shot edge.

The Vulcans didn't waste much time in the second half, scoring six minutes into the half on Rill's score, off the assist from Brende Yoshizumi. For Rill, a Nampa native who transferred to UHH from the University of Idaho, it was her first goal as a Vulcan.

Just five minutes later Strazzo added to the lead (3-1), taking a pass from Crystal Sanchez at 56:34. Sanchez would assist with an insurance goal in the 80th minute by delivering a pass to Wall. The freshman (Konawaena HS) notched her first collegiate score with the goal.

Central Washington added a late goal (88:11) to account for the final 4-2 tally.

CWU finished with a shot edge over the Vulcans, 13-7. But UHH made all four shots on goal count with four goals. The Wildcats had seven shots on goal, five of them saved by Vulcan keeper Bailey Cahill.

Okamura's Vulcans will return home and take a well-earned rest, preparing for their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 28 against Hawaii Pacific (12:30 pm).
