Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars go long range to top Vulcans

AZUSA, Calif.—Host Azusa Pacific has a lot of weapons, but they chose long range bombs to build an early lead and eventual victory over Hawai`i Hilo in women's basketball action on Thursday night at the Felix Events Center, 88-57.

The Cougars hit four three's in the first period and another at the very beginning of the second to set the base for the victory. In doing so, they won their fourth straight game to improve to 13-3 overall and 7-3 in the Pacific West Conference. The Vulcans, who had won four of five to start the New Year, fell to 4-6 in conference action and to 5-9 on the year.

APU's Savanna Hanson had 25 points to lead all scorers. She had 16 in the first half, nailing 5-of-7 three-pointers. He finished with six treys in nine attempts, and also had eight rebounds. The Cougars had 11 total long range scores in the game.

Kim Schmelz led the Vulcans with 18 points. Allie Navarette added 16 and Mandi Kawaha had 11. Navarette also had 12 rebounds, and Makayla Tablit had seven assists.

The Vulcans broke out to a 6-5 lead three minutes into the first quarter after a pair of treys from  Kawaha. But the Cougars countered with a 10-0 run and wouldn't trail again. They would go on to lead 22-13 at the end of the first quarter, hitting 4-of-7 three-pointers, including two by Hanson.

Hanson would even add a four-point play in the second quarter to help her team to a 46-26 lead at intermission. The Cougars hit 7-of-12 three's in the first half and all nine of their free throw attempts.

Hanson hit another long bomb to open up the third period and would follow up a few moments later with a conventional three-point play. The Cougars led 70-42 at the end of the third period.

Hanson, the PacWest Preseason Player of the Year, would add another trey in the fourth before fouling out with six minutes left.

The Vulcans will wrap up this short two-game road trip on Saturday at Fresno Pacific. Start time is 12:30 Hawaii time.
