HILO, Hawai`i—Academy of Art's Chanel Stuart had a career-high 20 points, hitting 5-of-7 three-point attempts to lead the visiting Urban Knights to a 74-64 victory over Hawai`i Hilo in women's basketball action on Friday night at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
Academy of Art improved to 7-11 overall with the win and to moved up to 5-9 in the Pacific West Conference. The Vulcans are now also 5-9 in the PacWest and dropped to 6-12 on the year.
Allie Navarette had a career-high 34 points for the Vulcans, 27 of those in the second half. But the Vulcans dug too big a hole early and the Urban Knights never trailed in the contest in winning two of three games on their island trip.
Pam Wilmore added 19 for the Urban Knights and Lily Perkins had 18 points and 13 rebounds.
ART U came out of the gates hot. They scored a conventional three-point play on the first possession of the game (Aari'yanna Sanders) and then hit a three-pointer from behind the arch (Josselyn Morris) on their second possession. They led at the end of the quarter, 23-11, thanks in part to Stuart, who hit a pair of three's.
Stuart added another in the second quarter (3-for-3) to make it 32-18. Coming into the game, Stuart was 4-for-33 from behind the arch. The Urban Knights would lead by as many as 15 points in the quarter before settling for the 36-24 halftime count. UH Hilo shot just 26 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes. ART's Perkins nearly had a double-double with ten points and seven rebounds at intermission.
But the Vulcans made it interesting in the third quarter. They opened with a 5-0 run and push that out to 13-2, thanks to Navarette. The 6-0 junior had ten points in the quarter, and tied it at 39-39 on a pair of free throws. The Vulcans would tie it again at 41-41 on a basket by
Jenna Waki, but ART would answer with a 7-0 run and would actually never trail in the game.
After a 46-42 score at the end of the third, the Urban Knights slowly increased their lead in the fourth quarter. The Vulcans could get no closer than six points before the final score of 74-64 was posted.
Navarette, who's previous career high was 33, hit 11-of-18 shots from the field on a variety of post moves. She nailed 12-of-13 free throw attempts and had eight rebounds. Waki was also in double figures with 10 points, but the Vulcans shot just 35 percent from the floor on the night.
The Vulcans will wrap up this four-game homestand on Sunday with a 5 p.m. match-up with island rival Chaminade.
