HILO, Hawai`i—One side effect to pulling off a couple of upset victories is that you have lost the ability to sneak up on anyone any more.
After a pair of impressive wins over Fresno Pacific and Point Loma to open 2020, the Vulcans came back down to earth against a good Biola team on Monday night at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium, 87-57.
The Eagles improved to 10-4 with the victory and they are 6-2 in the Pacific West Conference. The Vulcans saw their modest two-game win streak come to a close and are now 2-5 in the PacWest and 3-8 overall.
Biola shot a scorching 12-of-25 from three-point range and nailed 60 percent of their shots overall. They never trailed in the game and used their signature defense (they give up only 56 points a contest) to hold UH Hilo to 32 percent shooting. The Vulcans were just 2-of-20 from three-point range.
Allie Navarette led the Vulcans with 15 points.
Kim Schmelz was also in double figures with 12.
Malia Lee had eight points and seven rebounds.
Aysia Johnson had a season-high 16 points to lead Biola. Jazz Benn has a near triple-double with 13 points nine rebounds and eight assists.
Biola didn't leave much doubt in this one, building a 28-9 lead in the first quarter. A four-point play by Kayla Macedo ended the half. Macedo would go on to pot four three-pointers off the bench for 13 points.
A 6-0 run by the Vulcans late in the second quarter, all on
Jenna Waki baskets, kept them closer, but Johnson hit a basket at the buzzer to make it 45-26 at the break. The Vulcans stayed cold in the third quarter (1-of-14 from behind the arc), and the Eagles had another buzzer beater at the end of the period, a three-pointer by Benn. That's how the night would go.
The Eagles also out-rebounded the Vulcans, 38-23. Navarette had seven of her 15 points at the free throw line.
The Vulcans will play game four of this five-game homestand on Thursday night, hosting Dominican at 5 pm.
