Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

More records for Allie and a win for UHH

OAKLAND, Calif.—The hits (and records) just keep on coming for Allie Navarette.

And so did a win tonight for the UH Hilo women's basketball team over host Holy Names, 67-50, on Monday at Tobin Gymnasium. UH Hilo got back on the winning track to improve to 7-10 in Pacific West Conference play and to 8-13 overall. Holy Names dropped their tenth straight to fall to 1-20 overall and 1-16 in conference play.

Navarette tied one of the only school records that she doesn't hold and broke two others. She had 34 points, tying Sheila Azevedo's same output in 2006 against Montana Tech. She also broke her own single-game record with 19 rebounds, bettering her previous mark by one when she had 18 against Notre Dame de Namur in her freshman season (2018). Adding one more, she was 12-of-12 from the free throw line to top the best UHH single-season percentage for a game, previously held by Hilary Hurley (11-of-11 vs. BYU-Hawaii, 2012).

The junior post nailed 10-of-16 shots from the field, including 2-of-3 from three-point range.

Kim Schmelz joined the Vulcan standout in double figures with 14 points, as did Mandi Kawaha with 12 points and eight assists.

A torrid first quarter helped sooth the woes of a cold second period.

UH Hilo jumped out to a 7-0 first quarter lead on a Navarette three-pointer. They would move that lead to 16-4 and finish the period at 21-8. Navarette was perfect from the field in compiling 11 points.

But the Vulcans went stone-cold in the second period, scoring just two points on a Navarette basket. The Hawks outscored them 10-2 to inch closer at the halftime break, 23-18. UHH was 1-for-10 in the second period.

Holy Names would cut the margin to four points (25-21) with 6:30 remaining in the third quarter. UHH then answered with a 7-0 run, which included five points by Schmelz. The Vulcans would go on to post a 40-30 margin at the end of three.

The Hawks would get no closer than nine points in the fourth quarter, and the Vulcans would lead by as many as 18.

The Vulcans nailed 20-of-23 three-point attempts and outrebounded the Hawks, 37-30.

Holy Names was led by Elle Burland and Gernice Martin with 12 points each.

The Vulcans continue this four-game road trip with a Thursday match-up at Notre Dame de Namur. Start time in Belmont is 5:30 p.m. PT.
