Vulcans fall short vs. Mustangs

TUCSON, Ariz.--UH Hilo had seven hits in the game, but couldn't piece enough of them together in falling to Western New Mexico in the first game of the Cactus Classic on Thursday, 5-2.

The Mustangs improved to 6-3 on the season while the Vulcans dropped to 1-5. Kimberly Olivas and Chloe Domingo had two hits each for UH Hilo in the contest at Lincoln Regional Field.

The Vulcans will turn around and play West Texas A&M at 2:30 p.m. today Arizona time.

Western New Mexico had just six hits in the game against Vulcan pitchers Valerie Alvarado and Leah Gonzales, but they combined those hits with walks, a hit batter and an error to score twice in the second, once in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Alvarado pitched five innings, gave up five hits and walked five.

Gonzales pitched two innings, gave up just one hit, and fanned five.

UH Hilo used an error and an RBI-single from Olivas to score a run in the third, to pull within 2-1. They wouldn't score again until the seventh when Vevesi Liilii doubled and came home on Domingo's single to lead off the inning, but WNMU's Julia Vega was able to shut the door and get the final three outs to end the game.

Mustang starter Kristin Cocke pitched six innings and gave up only one earned run. WNMU didn't have an extra base hit, but Samantha Corral had two hits to lead their team.
