HONOLULU, Hawai`i—UH Hilo secured a season sweep of rival Chaminade and cemented their final landing place in the Pacific West Conference standings with a 60-52 women's basketball win on Thursday night at McCabe Gymnasium.
UH Hilo moved to 10-15 overall, 9-12 in the PacWest and guaranteed themselves a seventh place finish in the standings. That equals the program's best finish in the conference since the 2016 season (also seventh).
The Vulcans hit 8-of-17 three-point attempts, got 25 points and 14 rebounds from
Allie Navarette, and used double-figure scoring from
Mandi Kawaha (16) and
Mikayla Tablit (11) to gain the win.
The Vulcans went to the three-ball early to take a first quarter lead.
Sara Shimizu, Tablit and Kawaha all had treys in the first period to help the Vulcans to an 18-10 margin. UHH went into the second period up on the scoreboard, 18-14.
But Chaminade went on a 14-2 run to take a 24-20 lead early in the second period. Later, a three-pointer by Navarette tied it at 29-29, and one more Silversword basket gave the home team the halftime lead at 31-29. Navarette had 15 first-half points and Tablit hit all three of her trey attempts.
The Vulcans opened the third quarter on a 10-0 run, with three's from Kawaha and Tablit, another basket from Tablit and a lay-in by
Jessica Goodluck to give the Vulcans a 39-31 lead. But the Silverswords roared back with their own 8-0 run to tie it (39-39). UHH took a 44-41 lead into the fourth quarter, with eight treys in the scorebook.
In the final period, UHH had a 47-43 lead until Ellyonna Bankofier nailed back-to-back treys to give her team a 49-47 margin. Navarette tied it at the five minute mark (49-49) and then neither team scored for the next 2:40.
Navarette had a free throw at 2:20 and Kawaha kissed a reverse lay-up off the glass at 1:47, off a pretty pass from Tablit. Both teams missed on their next possession, but Navarette was fouled and hit free throws, as did Tablit to put the game out of reach at 56-49. Kawaha would knock down two charity tosses to account for the final 60-52 score.
Destiny Castro led the Silverswords with 15 points. Chaminade finishes 4-24 on the season and 4-18 in the PacWest.
The Vulcans will wrap up the 2019-20 season with a Saturday afternoon game at Hawaii Pacific. Start time at the Shark Tank against the No. 3 Sharks is 1 pm.
