Game Recap: Baseball |

Eagles win long day (and night) of baseball

HILO, Hawai`i--No. 2 regionally ranked Biola cranked out four home runs in a 10-6 opening win, waited out two hours of weather delay, and then won a 4-1 rain-shortened nightcap that ended just shy of midnight against host Hawai`i Hilo on Friday.

The red-hot Eagles improved to 11-1 with the victories, while the Vulcans fell to 2-6. All four games in the series are non-conference contests, as the two squads will meet again later in the spring for conference games in southern California. Saturday's doubleheader at Wong Stadium will begin at 3 pm.

Biola used a power surge in game one for the victory, and then shut down the Vulcan offense in the second game behind the pitching of Larson Kindreich and Andrew Beauvais.

In the opener, the Vulcans jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to hits from Jacob Igawa, Jaryn Kanbara, Chris Aubort and Lawson Faria. But the Eagles answered in the top of the second after three straight walks loaded the table and all three eventually scored.

Biola's Brandon Cody, playing in only his second game all season, drove in his second run of the game with a solo home run in the fourth to give his team a 4-3 lead. Jacob Portaro drove in two more in the fifth inning with a double, and Jackson Collins made it 6-3 with an RBI single in the fifth.

The home runs returned in the sixth (Connor Kostecka) and eighth inning. Ryan Gallegos hit a two-run shot and Andy Van Antwerp knocked one over the fence to give the visitors a 10-3 lead. But the Vulcans made a game comeback in the eighth with three runs and had the bases loaded before the Eagles ended the rally. In the ninth, Kanbara had a double but was left stranded.

The Vulcans had 12 hits in the game but left 10 runners on base. Kanbara had three hits, including a pair of doubles. Igawa had two hits and two runs, and Lawson Faria went 2-for-4. Portaro had three of Biola's 10 hits.

The rains came hard almost immediately after the first game ended, causing a two-hour delay between pitches. When the game finally began, the Eagles wasted no time getting on the scoreboad in the top of first, using a hit batter, a base hit and a double steal to bring home a run. They scored in the second, helped by a two-out error and a Tyler Baca double, and had another plate crossing in the third, courtesy of two hit batters, two walks and an error (3-0).

Meanwhile, Kindreich was lights out through three innings, fanning five without giving up a hit. He would leave the game in the fourth, and the Eagles would add yet another run when Cole Beemer led off the inning with a double and later scored (4-0). Beauvais entered the game, and didn't give the Vulcans much to work with either. He pitched 4.2 innings, allowing just two hits, one unearned run and he struck out two. The Vulcans scored their only run in the fourth when Casey Yamauchi delivered UHH's first hit of the game, went to third on an error by Beauvais, and scored on a double play.

In the eighth, the 6-foot-7 right-hander struck out the first two Vulcans he faced, before Aubort kept the inning alive with a single. With Igawa at bat, the rains drenched the field again, leading to the game officially being called complete.

Baca and Robert Anthony Cruz had two hits each for the Eagles. Beauvais got the win (2-0), and Kyle Alcorn the loss (0-1). UHH got two effective relief performances from Garrett Gladney (1.1 innings, no hits) and Aaron Davies (2.2 innings, one hit).
