HONOLULU, Hawai`i—For the second time in less than 24 hours, big brother Hawai`i (Manoa) rallied from behind to take a baseball victory over sister school Hawai`i Hilo at Les Murakami Stadium.
On Saturday, it was the Rainbow Warriors scoring three times on the bottom of the seventh to claim a 6-4 win over the Vulcans. On Friday night, it was a walk-off home run in the ninth for the 5-4 win.
Hawai`i begins the 2020 season at 2-0, while the Vulcans are now 2-2. UH Hilo will play a doubleheader at Hawai`i Pacific on Sunday (Hans L `Orange Park) beginning at 11 am.
On Saturday afternoon in Honolulu, UH Hilo took a 4-3 lead in the top of the seventh after
Kobie Russell singled and
Jaryn Kanbara ripped a two-run homer.
But the Rainbow Warriors answered in the bottom half against the Vulcan bullpen, lashing out five hits and chasing three runs across the plate. Dustin Demeter, who hit Friday's walk-off home run, had the big blow with a triple.
From there, UH's Vince Reilly shut down the visitors with six straight outs to close the game and earn the save.
Earlier, the Vulcans had scored a pair of runs in the second inning when
John Bicos doubles and was brought home by
Lucas Sakay's single.
Casey Yamauchi would double to bring home Sakay.
Eight different players had 11 total hits for UH Hilo, led by Kanbara's 3-for-4 day.
Chris Aubort had two hits for the Vulcans, while Kole Kaler led the Rainbow Warriors with three hits, including two doubles.
Christian Casados started the game for the Vulcans and gave up two earned runs in 4.2 innings.
Aaron Davies took the loss in relief for UHH.
