All 12 Pacific West Conference schools, including the University of Hawai`i Hilo, have unanimously agreed to cancel the remainder of conference and championship competition for the 2020 spring seasons.
The agreement was made today (Monday, March 16) via a conference call. Included in that agreement was the curtailing of any countable athletics related activities through the end of the spring seasons. The decision was made in accordance with recent NCAA mandates on competition and eligibility relief.
"This decision was made with the best interest of our student-athletes, coaches, staff and fans," said Vulcan athletic director
Patrick Guillen. "These are challenging times for sure, but I am certain we will get through this period. This decision was a difficult one conference-wide but it is the right decision at this time in the best interest of the health and safety of our students, coaches, staff and community."
The NCAA announced earlier that all student-athletes that competed in the short 2020 spring season will not lose that year of eligibility.
For UH Hilo, the spring seasons cut short include men and women's golf, baseball, softball and men's and women's tennis.
"The COVID-19 situation continues to change so rapidly with new federal guidelines about about group gatherings and social distancing," Guillen added. "We want to be thoughtful and take every precaution necessary."
