HILO, Hawai'i-- The
UH Hilo women's basketball team will take on
Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) nationally ranked No. 5 Alaska Anchorage on Sunday, Dec. 19 at 1pm in the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium. Â
The Seawolves received national rankings this past week by two major publication sources. The national ranking mentioned above was on Dec. 14 in the WBCA NCAA Division II Top 25 Women's Basketball Coaches Poll, which is voted by coaches nationwide. The next major publication ranking that UAA received was from theÂ
Women's Basketball Division II Media Poll, sponsored by D2SIDA where Alaska Anchorage was ranked No. 1 in the West Region and No. 1 in the National Poll for their 7-0 overall record.Â
The Vulcans received votes in the
D2SIDA West Region Poll (voted by SID's nationwide) and will go into their game against No. 5 Alaska Anchorage on a modest two-game winning streak. Two games may not be overwhelming for a winning streak, but the wins were against two high-level teams.Â
The
Vulcans topped Point Loma, 78-66 in a strong team performance. The Sea Lions were projected to finish third in the PacWest Conference Preseason Poll, while UH Hilo was projected to finish ninth.
UHH scored their next win (Dec. 12)
against Hawaii Pacific, in a dominant 73-50 win. This win was special to the women's basketball program for two main reasons reasons. First off, this was the Vulcans' first time beating the Sharks since 2012. UHH broke an almost 10-year losing streak to HPU, which was even more special to do at home. Secondly, before the game UHH and HPU were tied in the PacWest Standings for fourth place.Â
