HILO, Hawai`i--Nationally ranked Hawai`i Pacific drained 12 three-pointers and won their 35th consecutive game at the expense of the Hawai`i Hilo Vulcans on Wednesday afternoon at the Vulcan Gymnasium, 68-49.Â
The Sharks, ranked No. 2 or No. 4 depending on which national poll you read, improved to 10-0 on the year and to 9-0 in the Pacific West Conference. The Vulcans are now 4-5 overall, and the same in PacWest play.
The two teams will play again tomorrow at noon (Hawaii time).Â
Reigning PacWest Player of the Year Amy Baum had 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists to lead the Sharks. Ally Bates added 16 points and eight boards and Alysha Marcucci was in double figures with 13 points.Â
The Vulcans were led by
Kim Schmelz, who had 11 points. The senior guard now has 999 career points, second all-time on the Vulcan scoring list.
Mandi Kawaha added 10 points, four rebounds and four assists.
Malia Lee had a near double-double with eight points and nine boards.
The Vulcans, who led by 18 points in the second quarter the last time these two teams met, trailed just 8-7 midway through the first quarter after a Kawaha three-pointer. But the Sharks got in gear, going on a 13-2 run to close the quarter and take a 20-9 margin into the second period. The Vulcan stayed within shouting distance at the half (35-22), despite six treys made by the Sharks.
But HPU outscored UHH 18-10 in the third quarter and the Vulcans couldn't get any closer than 11 points in the second half.Â
The Sharks were 12-of-36 from three-point land (33 percent) and outrebounded the Vulcans, 45-32.Â
On Thursday, the Vulcans will honor their three seniors after the game--Lee, Schmelz and
Sara Shimizu. The video stream is available at hiloathletics.com.
