HONOLULU, Hawai`i--Sasa Vuksanovic and
Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones both turned in double-doubles to help their team lead from nearly start to finish during a Hawai`i Hilo 71-62 win over host Hawai`i Pacific on Super Bowl Sunday.
The win at the Shark Tank moved UH Hilo's record to 5-1 on the season and they have the same mark in the Pacific West Conference. Hawai`i Pacific is now 0-4, with all four losses coming at the hands of the Vulcans.
UH Hilo will have an extra week to prepare for a rematch with Chaminade in Hilo on February 20-21.
Pivot Vuksanovic had his fifth double-double in six games with 20 points and 11 boards. Tait-Jones had 16 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, and point guard
Darren Williams added 14 points.
HPU, who had more offense than during Saturday's 67-47 loss to UHH, was led by Lachlan Viney's 23 points. But the home team shot just 38 percent from the field in falling for the fourth straight time.
The Sharks jumped out to a 5-0 lead but the Vucans would soon rally back and lead by as many as 18 points in the first half (37-19). UHH would lead 37-23 at the break, thanks in part to Vuksanovic's 13 points and five offensive rebounds. The Vulcans scored 15 of their points before intermisson off HPU turnovers.
The second half was played much more evenly, and the Sharks cut the lead to seven points with 3:30 to go but they wouldn't get any closer than that. Vuksanovic answered with a pair of free throws and Tait-Jones hit a three-pointer to help seal the victory.
UH Hilo's 5-1 start is their best since the 2005 Vulcan squad began at 4-0.
