HONOLULU, Hawai`i--After a near miss in a 3-2 loss and another respectful showing during a 6-2 setback, the Hawaii Hilo baseball team finally ran out of gas on Sunday afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium.
The result was a 13-0 win for the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors to wrap up the three-game series. The University of Hawaii is off to an impressive start with an 8-2 record, while the Vulcans begin the year at 0-3.
Three Manoa pitchers combined to shut down UH Hilo on three hits, with middle reliever Austin Teixeira going five innings and allowing only one base knock. Offensively, the Rainbow Warriors banged out 17 hits, including home runs by Alex Baeza and Safea Mauai. Kale Kaler had four hits for the hosts and Matt Campos added three.Â
Kyle Alcorn was the starting pitcher for the Vulcans, giving up a pair of runs in 2.2 innings, and the Vulcans only trailed 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth. But Hawaii erupted for four runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and three in the seventh to put the game away.
The Vulcans had singles from
Chris Aubort,
Ryan Cho and
Brett Komatsu, with the latter dropping down a perfect bunt during a pinch hit at-bat in the ninth inning. Seven different pitchers toed the rubber for UH Hilo with Alcorn taking the loss.Â
UH Hilo was scheduled to host Hawaii Pacific next weekend on campus, but those games will likely be moved to the back end of the UHH schedule. The Vulcan baseball field on the UHH campus is currently under water, with more rain scheduled this week.Â
