HONOLULU, Hawai`i--The odds were pretty decent that the fourth and final women's soccer match of the season for the UH Hilo Vulcans could end in a tie, like the previous three had.
It did, but UHH had to fight like you know what just to get to the deadlock.
Jodi Lillie scored twice in the second half to overcome a 2-0 deficit to pull the Vulcans even with host Hawaii Pacific on Sunday afternoon at St. Louis Field. Lillie's second goal came with just three minutes left in the contest to pull her team to the 2-2 tie.
That means the Vulcans end the spring season with a 0-0-4 record, while HPU wraps up the Hawaii Pod slate with a 0-1-3 record. Chaminade wins the pod at 1-0-3, the only squad to win a match among the even-as-can-be threesome.
It looked for about 55 minutes that the Sharks were going to get their first win of the spring and the Vulcans would tally their first loss.
The Sharks scored twice in the first half, including moments into the contest. Jacey Iwane made it 1-0 in the fourth minute (3:46) and Caylie Uyema sent her team to the halftime locker room with a 2-0 lead at 40:12 with a goal in the upper right corner of the net.
HPU continued to hold that two-goal margin until Lillie broke through at 55:49. The former All-PacWest defender now turned midfielder gathered up an errant shot off the crossbar and pushed the ball through a scrum in front of the goal into the net to make the count 2-1.
Still, 30 more minutes passed with no score and a Shark victory seemed more and more likely. But at 86:58 Lillie struck again, driving the ball past the Shark keeper low and center to the goal.
Daelenn Tokunaga had one more opportunity for the Vulcans 30 seconds later with a shot, but it sailed right.Â
UH Hilo had 14 shots on the day, nine of them on goal. Lillie had four of those (three on goal) as did Tokunaga. Hawaii Pacific had five shots, three on goal. Two Vulcans split time in the goal, with
Taylor Hornburg playing the first half and
Viviana Poli the second period.Â
The spring season served as a freebie for the Vulcans and all teams in the NCAA, as all players will retain their same eligibility year heading into the 2021 Fall season.Â
