HONOLULU, Hawai`i--Host Chaminade dropped No. 22 UH Hilo into a deep hole early and the Vulcans were never able to climb out during a 75-62 men's basketball game on Saturday at McCabe Gymnasium.
UH Hilo's eight-game win streak was snapped and their NCAA postseason hopes took a jolt as well. The Vulcans, 10-2, came into the weekend ranked No. 7 in the west region, and the NCAA Selection Committee will announce the top six teams tomorrow night (5:30 pm HT).
Chaminade finishes their season at 5-7, having gone 2-4 on the year with the Vulcans and 3-3 against Hawaii Pacific.
Darren Williams led UHH with 21 points and four steals. He converted 8-of-8 free throw opportunities.
Sasa Vuksanovic had 15 points and seven rebounds and
Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones added 13 points and seven boards.
But all the Vulcans were cold from the opening tip, eventually sealing their fate.
Chaminade jumped out to a 11-0 lead in the first 5:30 of play, and the Vulcans didn't get on the board until Vuksanovic's free throw with 13:59 left in the half (11-1). The Silverswords would lead by as many as 23 points in the first half (37-14) and took a 39-17 lead into the halftime locker room. UHH had only six field goals in the first 20 minutes (6-for-27), shooting just 22 percent.
Williams opened the second half with a three-pointer and
Jalen Thompson added a trey a few moments later to the cut the lead to 16 points (41-25), but the Vulcans wouldn't get any closer until the final horn, when they scored the last six points of the game for the 75-62 count.
Chaminade had a 46-31 rebound edge to help offset UHH's 45 second half points. Malik Parsons led a balanced CUH attack with 14 points, and Sawyer Storms added 13 points and nine rebounds.
In year one of head coach
Kaniela Aiona's direction, the Vulcans finished eight games above .500. Even though it will have an asterisk as a pandemic year, the Vulcans have their first winning campaign since the 2010-11 UH Hilo team went 16-11.
