HONOLULU, Hawai`i--Saving their best for last, the Hawai`i Hilo women's basketball team put up 93 points and tied a school record for most three-pointers made in a game in their 2020-21 season finale on Saturday afternoon.
The Vulcans wrapped up a 6-6 season in stylish fashion, bombing in 13 treys in a 93-59 win over Chaminade at McCabe Gymnasium. UH Hilo finished the season with six wins over the Silverswords and six losses to Hawaii Pacific. Chaminade ends the year at 0-12.
Kim Schmelz ended her brilliant career by equaling her career high with 29 points and tying the school record for most treys made in a game with seven. The 5-9 guard nailed 7-of-10 long bomb attempts, sharing the UHH single-game record held by
Kirstie Williams, who dropped in seven three-balls on three different occasions in 2014.
Schmelz's teammates were hot as well. The Vulcans swished in 13-of-25 treys (52%), equaling the 13 three-pointers made by the 2008 squad against Hawaii Pacific. Six different Vulcans made three's in the game.
Mandi Kawaha was ten points back of Schmelz with 19 points and she also dished out eight assists. Kawaha was 3-of-7 behind the arch.
Jenna Waki and
Mindy Kawaha were also in double figures with 10 points each. The younger Kawaha was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field.
The 93 points by the Vulcans was easily their highest point total of the year (73 was the previous best), and it was the fourth largest point tally in the school record books (99 vs. CUH in 2008 is the record). The Vulcans also shot a season-best 55 percent from the field.
It was all UH Hilo from the opening tip.
The Vulcans led 7-0 two minutes into the contest, soon to be followed by leads of 11-1 and 20-3. They finished the first quarter with a 26-9 lead, having converted 10-of-14 field goal attempts.
They scored 22 more points in the second quarter, hitting 6-of-8 three's, and led at the break 48-25. They led by as many as 28 points in the second period (43-15).
The third quarter was played evenly (20-20), and UHH then scored 25 points in the final period as all 10 players that were suited up entered the scoring column.
Emma Morris led Chaminade with 17 points.
Albeit with an asterik in a weird pandemic season playing against teams in the Hawaii Pod only, the Vulcans finished with their best record since 2013 when they were 13-11.
