Hawaii Trio Plays for Third Time

A trio of Hawaii volleyball teams will play for the third time this coming weekend, this time at McCabe Gymnasium on the campus of Chaminade University.

UH Hilo, Hawaii Pacific and the Silverswords will play each other twice each at the PacWest Spring #3 tournament. UH Hilo opens play with a 2:30 Saturday match-up against Hawaii Pacific, followed by a 7 pm match with host Chaminade. On Sunday, UHH will play HPU at 10 am and complete the tournament with a 2:30 pm match versus the Silverswords.

The Vulcans are 7-1 on the season, having gone 3-1 against Chaminade and 4-0 in match-ups with the Sharks. Next weekend (April 23-25), UH Hilo will be the host with special guest Alaska Anchorage joining the fray for three days of top volleyball action. UAA, a perennial west region power, is currently 7-1 in their winter-spring season.

UH Hilo will try and keep things rolling this weekend after going 4-0 two weeks ago Hilo. Bria Beale leads the Vulcans with 3.79 kills per set, and she lists second in that category in PacWest stats. She is also third in service aces (0.58) and second in overall points (4.53). Opposite side hitter Alexandria Parisian is second on the squad in kills (2.70) and Taira Kaawaloa (1.94) is next.

Setting them up for success is Kendall Kott, who ranks second in the PacWest in assists per set (8.67). Middle Ashton Jessee is fourth in blocks (1.18) and freshman Tani Hoke is third in the conference in digs (5.06).

While there is no postseason opportunities for NCAA Division II volleyball teams, the Vulcans still keep an eye on what else is going on around the PacWest. Fresno Pacific is 5-1 in the NorCal pod and 9-5 overall with Holy Names next in that pod at 4-2. Teams in the Southern California Pod have taken turns beating each other up, with Biola sitting on top at 4-1 (4-2 overall). Point Loma is 3-3, defending conference champ Azusa Pacific is 2-3 (6-3 overall) and Concordia is 2-3 (3-3 overall).
