HILO, Hawai`-- Hawai`i Pacific snapped UH Hilo's six-game winning streak with a 6-3 win in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader at George and Marion Hall Stadium. Then for good measure, they made it a twinbill sweep with a 4-3 win in the nightcap.
The Sharks doubled their win total on the season to improve to 4-15. The Vulcans fell to 11-7.
Casey Yamauchi had five hits on the day for the Vulcans, including four in the first game.
Chris Aubort had four hits on the day and
Trey Yukumoto was 4-for-6. But the Vulcan pitching staff was running on fumes and Hawaii Pacific's pitching stepped up big on the final day of the series.
In the first game, HPU built a 5-0 lead through three and a half innings to pace starting pitcher Cole Mayeshiro to a safe lead. The Shark would go five innings and allow one earned run without walking a batter. Grant Dragmire pitched the final two innings allowing only one hit to get the save.Â
Seven different Vulcan pitchers toed the rubber in a committee effort.
Jacob Liberta pitched the first two innings and took the loss.Â
In the second game, the Sharks scored three runs in the top of the sixth to erase a 1-0 Vulcan lead. They added one more run in the top of the seventh to take a 4-1 margin.Â
But the Vulcans rallied in the seventh and final inning after base hits by
Bradyn Yoshida and Yukumoto.
Mason Campbell drove home both with a single to draw near at 4-3, but Dragmire came back into the game to get the final out and pick up his second save of the day.Â
Maxime Beaulieu pitched the first 4.1 innings for the Sharks and allowed just one earned run.
Christian DeJesus pitched 5.1 solid innings, giving up only two earned runs, striking out four, but took the loss.
The Vulcans will get a much needed weekend off from games next weekend, before traveling back to Oahu for six games the first weekend of May.Â
