Vulcans Second Rally Comes Up Short

HONOLULU, Oahu--UH Hilo's second rally in the same day came up a few batters short during a 4-1 loss to Hawaii Pacific on Friday night under the Les Murakami Stadium lights.

The Vulcans, who earlier had rallied back from five runs down for a 9-8 win over the Sharks, fell to 5-5 overall with the loss and to 5-2 in the Pacific West Conference. HPU is now 2-9 on the year and 2-5 in conference play.

Hawaii Pacific's Brandon Peterson held the Vulcan bats mostly silent, pitching six strong innings and allowing only three hits. He didn't give up a run, walked four and struck out seven.

After he left the game, UH Hilo rallied in the top of the ninth. Kobie Russell singled, pinch-hitter Braeden Coloma doubled and Lawson Faria was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Bradyn Yoshida followed with an RBI single to make it 4-1, but Shark reliever Grant Dragmire came into the game to get the final two outs and leave the bases loaded.

Earlier, HPU would get all the runs that they would need with one in the first and three more in the second. In building a 4-0 lead, the Sharks would use four hits including an RBI-double by Joe Gallagher to gain the lead against Vulcan starter Kyle Alcorn

Alcorn (2-2) would leave the game after five innings and four runs. Jarod Kaneshiro would give UHH a solid 3.1 innings of relief work, giving up only one hit, no runs with two strikeouts.

Yoshida would take credit for two of UHH's six hits and their only RBI.

The Vulcans and Sharks will play two more tomorrow with start time set at 11 am.
