Vulcans Rally in Time for 8-7 Win

AZUSA, Calif.--After two straight games where late rallies fell just short, the UH Hilo baseball team used extra time and yet another late comeback to top Academy of Art in 11 innings on Friday night, 8-7.

The Vulcans will have one more game in the Pod Series, taking on Azusa Pacific on Saturday at 4 pm. The Vulcans are now 14-14- on the season, while the Urban Knights dropped to 16-19. In UHH's first two Pod Series games, they dug big holes that even a late rally couldn't save in falling to the Urban Knights (Thursday) and Azusa Pacific earlier today.

This game began as a pitcher's dual that showed no signs of running late into the night.

UHH's Aaron Davies and ART's Noah Daubin gave up just one run each through the first three innings. ART's Ty Conrad hit a two-out home run in the first to put the Knights on the board, and they would add an unearned run in the fourth and push two more runs across in the sixth, to lead 3-0 and chase Davies who gave up just two earned runs and four hits in 5.2 innings.

Daubin was working in and out of trouble on the hill for ART, until UHH finally broke through in the sixth. A two-run homer by Mason Campbell got the Vulcans on the board and finally spelled the end of the evening for Daubin, at least on the pitcher's mound. He left as the pitcher of record after six innings, allowing two runs and six hits.

The Vulcans threatened in the eighth with two base runners but ART's Austin Labarber was able to escape the jam. In the top of the ninth, Academy of Art seemingly put the game away with solo home runs by Justin Summers and pitcher-turned-hitter Daubin to make the count 6-2.

But UH Hilo scrambled back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring four times on just one hit, taking advantage of an error, walks and a wild pitch. That improbably sent the game to extra innings.

The Vulcans had a chance to walk it off in the tenth but left the bases loaded. In the top of the 11th, Daubin went yard again to give his team a 7-6 lead, but the Vulcans scored twice in the flip side of the inning. A John Bicos single, two hit batters and a Bradyn Yoshida base hit, which incluided an outfield throwing error, allowed two Vulcans to scamper home for the wild 8-7 victory.

Casey Yamauchi had three hits in the game while Bicos and Yoshida had two each.
