Vulcan Season Ends with Loss to Eagles

IRVINE, Calif.--A season like no other for the UH Hilo softball team ended at the NCAA Regional tournament with a 12-3 loss to host Concordia on Friday night at Eagle Field.

The Vulcans, who played the first month and a half of their season solely against Hawaii Pacific and Chaminade, ended the year with losses to a team of Eagles--first to Biola (9-0) and then to No. 1 seed Concordia.

UH Hilo ended their year at 19-13, while Concordia advances to Saturday's final round with a 33-12 record to take on Biola. Concordia will have to beat Biola twice to advance to next week's NCAA tournament in Denver.

Tonight's game got away from the Vulcans quickly. Sydney Sprinkle hit a two-run homer in the first inning to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead and the home team added another run in the second on Megan Massa's RBI single. They would add two more runs in the fourth and then explode for seven runs in the sixth to push the lead to 12-0. The Vulcans, serving as the home team on the scoreboard, added three in the bottom half for the final tally of 12-3. Vevesi Liilii hit her third home run of the tournament and Skylar Thomas drove home a run with a double.

Thomas had three hits in the game for the Vulcans and Nikki Zielinski had two.

UH Hilo graduated seven players from this squad in head coach Callen Perreira's 25 the season.
