HONOLULU, Oahu -- The UH Hilo women's volleyball team was looking for revenge after dropping one to Saint Martin's the previous day.
Coming off a three-set win last night against Cal State East Bay the Vulcans worked together to do it again versus SMU. The Red and Black were successful in their quest improving 2-1, while the Saints fell 5-2 for the season.
The Vulcans fought to hold the lead in the first set as both teams went back and forth on the scoreboard. The Vulcans worked together to grasp and eventually hold the lead 25-22, thanks to an united offense that accumulated 14 kills spread out amongst five individuals. Bria Beale, Ashton Jessee, and Alexandria Parisian had three a piece combined with two single kills by Tani Hoke and Sydney Gott.
The Vulcans turned up the heat in the second set, securing an early lead. After a timeout where UHH was leading 18-10, the Lady Vulcans continued to apply pressure to the Saints defense which resulted in a dominant 25-18 win.
With two down and one to go, the third set started off within a points reach until Jessee smacked in a kill from the right side after a long rally. The Vulcans then held a steady lead for the majority of the match, until SMU closed the gap to a one-point game. Tia Allen (Saint Martin's) had the go-ahead kill that brought her team ahead of the Vulcans by one point. The Red and Black refused to back down working together to take the lead once again. Jessee executed the final kill that ended the set, 25-21.
Beale showcased her talent throughout the match tallying up 13 kills. She achieved an impressive career landmark of 1,006 career kills and 100 career aces. In the UH Hilo Career Lists Beale ranks sixth below Josimara Pinheiro who had 1,060 career kills.
UH Hilo will continue their feat in the Hawai'i Challenge Sunday, September 12th versus Montana State Billings at 12:30 p.m. HST.
