Vulcans to Host CUI in Saturday's NCAA West Region Second Round

Hawai‘i Hilo will take on PacWest-foe Concordia University Irvine Saturday, 1 p.m. at Vulcan Soccer Field.

HILO, Hawai'i – NCAA Women's Soccer Championship West Regional host Hawai'i Hilo is all set to take the field Saturday afternoon to take on familiar foe Concordia University Irvine at 1 p.m. at the Vulcan Soccer Field.

The unbeaten Vulcans earned the top seed in the West Region to host the first and second rounds of the NCAA subregion. The CUI Golden Eagles defeated the Golden Eagles — of Cal State University Los Angeles — Thursday afternoon, 1-0, to advance for a rematch with the Pacific West Conference Champions.

CUI netted the lone goal in the win over CSULA early in the fourth minute as Analisa Gjonovich took the direct corner kick and nailed it high in the opposite corner.

The Golden Eagles finished No. 3 in the PacWest standings, just one point behind Point Loma Nazarene, whom also won its NCAA opening-round matchup in a 1-0 victory over Sonoma State.

Hawai'i Hilo and CUI previously met just two weeks ago in Irvine as the Vulcans came away victorious, 3-1, to claim at least a share of the PacWest title before winning it outright a week later with a victory over Azusa Pacific to end the regular season.

In the matchup on Oct. 27, Teani Arakawa (Makawao, Hawai'i/King Kekaulike HS) got the Vulcans on the scoreboard early in seventh minute followed by scores from Filippa Graneld (Stockholm, Sweden/Stockholms Idrottsgymnasium) (19') and Grace VerHage (Otsego, Michigan/Otsego HS) (31').

CUI's Jadenn Carrillo squeezed in a high score off the top cross bar in the 38th minute as both teams went scoreless the rest of the way to the final score.

Entering Saturday's match, the Vulcans are just one of 32 teams remaining in contention for the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship.

A win Saturday would advance the Vulcans to the NCAA West Regional championship game against the winner between second-seeded Western Washington and third-seeded PLNU. The match would be played next Thursday, Nov. 17 at a site to be determined. As the top seed, Hilo could potentially host next week as well.
