HILO, Hawai'i– Eric Peterson poked a walk off single through the left side that scored Casey Yamauchi from second base, cementing the Vulcans' 5-4 win over Minnesota Crookston Friday night at Wong Stadium.
The Red and Black were chasing two runs in the bottom of the ninth (4-2). Lucas Sakay led the inning, working a walk as a pinch hitter. Braydn Yoshida continued the Vulcans' campaign with a single to right field that advanced Sakay to second. Brett Komatsu then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners in scoring position.
Yamauchi then did what he does best, which is come up clutch when his team needs him. Yamauchi blasted a double to right center that tied the game 4-4 with only one out. Peterson then drove in the game-winning run, stealing the game back from UMC (5-4).
UH Hilo moves 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the series against the Golden Eagles, while UMC falls 2-4 overall.
The Golden Eagles inflicted their damage against starting pitcher Kyle Alcorn who tossed three innings for the Vulcans. Three pitchers came in relief, combining to achieve six scoreless innings against UMC. Jacob Liberta closed the game for the Vulcans' with two shutout innings, most impressive was when he struck out the side in the top of the eighth.
UH Hilo continues their sixth-game series with double headers on Saturday and Sunday. First pitch will be tomorrow (Feb. 12) at 3pm HST.
