Hawks Halt Vulcans, 86-77

OAKLAND, Calif.– Holy Names took down the visiting Vulcans 86-77 Tuesday night in the Tobin Gymnasium.

This loss pushed UH Hilo down to sixth in the PacWest Standings, 12-11 overall and 8-8 in the PacWest Conference. The Hawks improved 6-17 overall and 4-11 in the league.

Despite a valiant effort by the Vulcans, the Hawks began with the lead and held it.

The Hawks had four shooters in the double digits with HNU's Edward Gray leading the floor.

Gray (HNU) had a floor-high of 25 points, just one basket ahead of Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones (23). Gray (HNU) is the third-highest scorer in the PacWest while Tait-Jones is right behind him at fourth. Both players shot above their game average, for Gray (HNU) 18.5 and Tait-Jones 18.1.

The Hawks made more mistakes on the court with 23 turnovers to the Vulcans' 14, falling prey to UH Hilo's  defensive pressure. The Vulcans picked up 12 steals, with Tait-Jones leading the team effort with a career-high of seven steals.

However, Holy Names made up for where they fell short in their three-point percentage and rebound collection.

The Hawks were 50 percent from downtown while the Vulcans were 24 percent and Holy Names out-rebounded UH Hilo 42-24.

The Vulcans will regroup and get ready to play Fresno Pacific Friday, Feb. 18 at the Special Events Center. This will be their first time facing off with the Sunbirds, tipoff at 5:30 pm HST.
