WAIPAHU, Hawai'i– The UH Hilo baseball team had a breakthrough in the fourth inning, posting up nine runs that created an overwhelming deficit for Hawai'i Pacific to match. The Vulcans continued to improve upon their lead ending with a 17-6 victory over the Sharks at Hans L'Orange Park.
The game was a tight contest throughout the first three innings, each team matched the other for runs until a big fourth-inning for UHH.
In the fourth inning alone, the Vulcans produced seven hits. Jaryn Kanbara scored the first two runs off a single pushed through the left side (5-3). Kobie Russell tripled to right center, chipping in an additional two runs and then scored on a HPU error, extending UH Hilo's lead (8-3).
Another run came across when Casey Yamauchi was hit, furthering UHH's lead 9-3. Then a triple by Joseph Gallagher sealed the inning for the Vulcans with three additional runs, 12-3.
The Vulcans tallied a whopping 22 hits in the first game of the day's nonconference doubleheader.
Aaron Davies threw five-complete innings, earning the win. Conor Meehan closed out the game with four innings of relief.
The Vulcans are now 11-4 overall and 0-2 in the PacWest Conference, while the Sharks fell 8-5 overall and 2-0 in the PacWest.
