Vulcans Shutout Hawks to Win Series

HILO, Hawai'i– Situational hitting and a solid combined pitching effort led to a Vulcan win of 4-0 against San Diego Christian College at Wong Stadium.

The Vulcans, now 4-0 overall, extend to a four-game winning streak, while the Hawks drop 1-11.

The Vulcans capitalized on the Hawks' mistakes in the first inning, picking up two unearned runs. Casey Yamauchi got on bag by a shortstop error and scored off a wild pitch (1-0). Eric Peterson walked and advanced to third on two wild pitches, scoring off a Joseph Gallagher ground out.

UHH extended their lead in the fourth. Ryan Cho jump started the inning with a right center gapper. Cho later scored off a third baseman throwing error, bringing the score up in UH Hilo's favor 3-0.

After a scoreless fifth inning, Kobie Russell hammered a long ball in the sixth that was well over the right field fence increasing the Vulcans' lead 4-0.

The UH Hilo pitching staff shined in a combined shutout, accumulating six strikeouts. Fifth-year senior Kyle Alcorn started the game and tossed three of those strikeouts in three innings of work. Connor Meehan followed Alcorn and was awarded the win this afternoon with one strikeout.

Cody Hirata had a one-inning appearance, followed by Takashi Umino who closed out the game for the Red and Black with two strikeouts in two innings of work.
