Visiting Vulcans Defeat Silverswords, 75-28

HONOLULU, Hawai'i– The UH Hilo women's basketball team picked up their most dominant win of the season over Chaminade in the McCabe Gymnasium. 

The Red and Black defeated the Silverswords 75-28, which was the least amount of points that CUH has scored all season. The Vulcans held the Silverswords 20.5 points below their typical game average of 48.5.

"It was a good win," said head coach David Kaneshiro. "Back to back games are not easy so I was very proud of how hard out team played tonight."

The Vulcans improve to a modest two-game winning streak, 10-7 overall and 7-6 in the PacWest Conference while the Silverswords drop 1-15 and 0-12 in the PacWest. 

UHH began the first quarter with a 12-0 jump over CUH, which was just the start of their offensive dominance. UH Hilo continued to hold at least a 10-point lead over the Silverswords the duration of the game, stretching their lead by as much 47 points in the final score 75-28. 

UH Hilo led a balanced attack with 10 of their 11 players scoring a basket. The bench contributed 34 points in the Vulcans' takeover with Sara Shimizu leading the charge with 10 points. 

The Vulcans outshot the Silverswords in the field by 24 percent and outshot them from behind the arc by 31 percent. Mandi Kawaha led UHH with 14 points, shooting 50 percent in the field.

UHH owned the boards, out-rebounded CUH 55-26. Twenty-three of UH Hilo's rebounds were offensive, which allowed them to score 17 second chance points to Chaminade's five. Nikki Miller led the court with rebounds collecting 13.

Up Next…The Vulcans will hit the road, traveling to Northern California where they will face Academy of Art, Holy Names, Fresno Pacific, and Dominican. First game is Sunday, Feb. 13 against ART U at 11am HST where no general admission spectators will be allowed.
