HILO, Hawai'i– The UH Hilo baseball team clinched the series win over Academy of Art in their 7-5 win over the Urban Knights in the seven-inning PacWest Conference ball game.
UHH (22-13 and 11-11 PacWest Conference) was chasing ART U (9-22 and 3-13 PacWest) 3-1 until the fourth inning where the Vulcans tied up the game 3-3.
Bradyn Yoshida batted a sacrifice fly to score the first run of the inning and the second run came home off an ART U wild pitch (3-3).
UH Hilo went on to score two runs in the fifth and sixth, putting them ahead 7-3. In the fifth frame Mason Campbell smacked a deep double that scored Casey Yamauchi who led the inning with a walk (4-3). Campbell ended up scoring due to an error by Academy of Art's second baseman (5-3).
In the sixth inning Lucas Sakay doubled to begin the Vulcans' rally. Yamauchi was then hit by a pitch, giving UHH runners on first and second with Campbell up to bat. Campbell then clutched up with another double, this time scoring the Red and Black's final runs (7-3).
Academy of Art had a good run in the seventh, but were unable to overcome UH Hilo's seven-run lead. The Urban Knights scored two runs before the game ended in UHH's favor 7-5.
Aaron Davies began the game, throwing four innings before he was relieved by Ty Honda and then John Kea to close.
Honda closed out the fifth inning, producing 1-2-3 outs to send his team to offense. Honda was the pitcher of record when the Vulcans pulled ahead, giving him his second win of the season. Kea closed and earned himself his ninth save of the season.
The Vulcans play next at home. UHH will face Hawai'i Pacific in a five-game series, including senior game on Sunday, Apr. 10 at 2:30pm.
