HILO, HAWAI'I– An exciting walk-off win closed out the twin bill for the Vulcans at Wong Stadium.
The Vulcans (12-5, 1-3 PacWest Conference) and the Sunbirds (8-4, 1-1 PacWest) will continue their conference series tomorrow Saturday, Mar. 5 at 3 and 7pm HST.
Game One (FPU 10, UHH 0)
Fresno Pacific executed a big second inning where they unleashed their most damage, batting in six runs with two singles and a triple (6-0).
Over the next seven innings the Sunbirds would space out eight hits to score four more runs, cementing their 10-0 victory.
FPU's Garrett Cooper went the distance, throwing a nine-inning shutout. Cooper (Fresno Pacific) only allowed seven hits in his second win of the season for the Sunbirds.
Casey Yamauchi led the Vulcans offensive effort going 2-for-4 at the plate.
Six UHH hurlers saw time on the hill including: James Yamasaki (4 IP), Ty Honda (1 IP), Devin Meyer (1 IP), Zach de Hondol (1 IP), Aaron Wehrman (1 IP), and Takashi Umino (1 IP).
Game Two (UHH 6, FPU 5)
The Vulcans picked up their fourth walk-off win of the season in the second part of the day's conference doubleheader against Fresno Pacific.
Joseph Gallagher crushed a gapper that successfully brought in Brett Komatsu, who was the game-winning run (6-5). Komatsu started off the bottom of the tenth by doubling down the left field line. Casey Yamauchi continued the inning with a bunt single, setting up Gallagher with the game-winner.
Kyle Alcorn got the nod for UH Hilo, throwing seven-scoreless innings. The 6-2 lefthander only allowed five hits and tossed four strikeouts in his seven-inning appearance.
Alden Norquist made a quick appearance in the eighth, facing two batters. The first batter flied out and the second struck out before senior John Kea would be brought in to close the game.
Kea threw a 1-2-3 inning in the tenth, picking up his third win of the season (3-1).
