HILO, Hawai'i–The UHH Tennis Courts have have been refurbished with improved drainage, a remodeled hitting court, brand new fencing, and the addition of two pickleball courts.
"We are grateful to our friends in UHH Facilities Planning and especially to construction manager Brian Hill for their efforts in coordinating this project," stated Athletic Director Patrick Guillen. "A big mahalo also to our UH Hilo senior administration for making this a high-priority for our campus. Without their support this project would not be possible. These new courts are a game-changer for our nationally recognized Vulcans tennis programs and greatly enhance the student experience here at UH Hilo. This new facility is also a wonderful addition to our community who utilizes our courts on a daily basis."
The tennis courts were completely demolished and resurfaced with the Laykold Surfacing System.
The Laykold Surfacing System has special force reduction technology that makes it the leading major events court surface in the US and Canada. Eight of the top 13 hard court events including the U.S. Open are played on Laykold Courts.
Laykold Surfacing is also environmentally friendly, utilizing recycled tennis balls in the construction.
What does this mean for the Vulcans Men's and Women's Tennis teams?
- Less fatigue due to force reduction technology.
- Injury prevention and reduction due to force reduction technology.
- Overall improved practice quality and competitiveness.
"The courts turned out great," said men's and women's tennis Head Coach Kallen Mizuguchi. Our teams and community will greatly benefit from the new court surfacing. We are so excited to have them up and running. Big mahalo to the athletic department for getting the ball rolling on this project!"
Vulcans Athletics is excited to re-open the courts to the community as first come first serve with the exception of scheduled UH Hilo tennis team practice and USTA league matches.
