HILO, Hawai'i – Daelenn Tokunaga (Waipahu, Hawai'i/Pearl City HS) and Grace VerHage (Otsego, Mich./Otsego HS) netted goals to propel the 15th-ranked Hawai'i Hilo women's soccer team past Chaminade, 2-0, Friday afternoon at the Vulcan Soccer Field to wrap up non-conference action.
Both goals were scored near the ends of the spectrum of the match with Toknuaga's goal (first of the season) hitting in the seventh minute and VerHage scoring in the 78th minute (third of the season).
On the first goal, VerHage crossed the ball in after a through ball from Filippa Graneld (Stockholm, Sweden/Stockholms Idrottsgymnasium), and after bouncing off two Silverswords defenders, Tokunaga swept the ball in from a few yards out.
Later in the match, Maisie Paulson (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista HS) countered the Chaminade-attack and found Tokunaga at midfield, who quickly sent the ball down to VerHage on a breakaway. VerHage made a move on the diving goalkeeper and got the open shot for the score.
It was the first match VerHage played in after missing the last three games.
The Silverswords managed just four total shots with two on goal as the Vulcans took 12 attempts with half of them on goal.
Vulcans freshman goalkeeper Lolo Retsky (Calabasas, Calif./Sierra Canyon School) made two saves and posted a fourth-consecutive shutout to improve to 5-0-1 on the season.
