WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – With a last-minute squeeze for the postseason, the Hawai'i Hilo baseball team's dream of qualifying for next month's four-team Pacific West Conference Championships was dashed by HPU with two losses Saturday afternoon at the Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park.
In Saturday's doubleheader, HPU won by scores of 12-8 and 11-4, but only the first game was counted as a PacWest Conference matchup.
Point Loma Nazarene (22-8), Azusa Pacific (22-10) and Fresno Pacific (17-12) had already secured three of the four qualifying berths, leaving Hawai'i Hilo (13-16) to battle with Holy Names (15-17) and Biola (13-15) for the final spot. With HNU and Biola splitting two wins apiece this weekend, it left a prime opportunity for the Vulcans, but it'll be Holy Names instead who snatches up the fourth berth.
GAME 2: HAWAI'I HILO 8, HPU 12 (7 INNINGS)
- Both teams traded runs early on, highlighted by RBI hits from Alec Yamauchi — a single in the first inning and a triple in the third — and a two-run home run by Cody Min to make it a 5-4 lead for the Vulcans after three complete innings.
- HPU evened the score in the fourth before exploding for a seven-run bottom of the fifth frame aided by three walks and two defensive errors.
- Casey Yamauchi brought the Vulcans within striking distance with a three-run home run in the sixth inning, but that would be it.
GAME 3: HAWAI'I HILO 4, HPU 11
- The Sharks racked up 16 hits to 11 from the Vulcans, but Hawai'i Hilo couldn't cash-in quite as much as it left 10 runners stranded. The Vulcans plated lone runs in the third, fourth, sixth and eighth innings while the Sharks had a three-run second and a four-run sixth.
- After early runs from HPU, Hawai'i Hilo got within striking distance by making it a 4-2 deficit after the top of the fourth, then later at 5-3 at the end of the top of the sixth, but the Sharks tacked on four runs to extend their lead.
- Bryce Tweedt went 3 for 3 with a double and a run scored. Joshua Fuentes hit his second career home run as Vance Oshrio and Mason Cook each had two-hit outings.
WHAT'S NEXT
Hawai'i Hilo moved to 13-16 in the PacWest (24-19 overall) as HPU moved to a 14-17 record (20-26 overall).
The Vulcans will conclude their season against HPU on Sunday with a non-conference contest.
The four-team PacWest Championships postseason tournament will be held May 10–12 in Fresno, California at FPU.
