HILO, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Hilo Women's Basketball fell to HPU, 68-51, in a season-opening non-conference matchup Sunday afternoon at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
Both teams started hot, combining to shoot 66.6 percent from the field through the first 10 minutes of action — the big difference came with HPU managing to hit four of their 11 total 3-pointers (.478) in the opening quarter. Hawai'i Hilo made just two long-range shots (.143).
Hawai'i Hilo remained within striking distance for much of the contest, but the Sharks managed to hit five 3-pointers in the final period to put the game away.
Caiyle Kaupu led the Vulcans with 16 points (6-8 FG) and seven rebounds. Kaile Cruz followed with 13 points, supplying the only two made 3-pointers for the home team. After shooting 70 percent in the first quarter, Hawai'i Hilo went just 29.7 percent the rest of the way.
