IRVINE, California – Hawai'i Hilo Women's Soccer will have an extended stay in Southern California after defeating Concordia, 4-2, Thursday evening to advance to Saturday's inaugural Pacific West Conference Championship Match at the Orange County Great Park.
Just four minutes into the match, CUI's Irandy Erazo capitalized on a misplay by the Vulcans defense to put the ball through the posts for an easy 1-0 lead. It took a little bit to get the engine going, but Hawai'i Hilo responded with a 44th minute goal by Alyssa Padron right before halftime to make it an even ballgame.
From there, the Vulcans rattled off three more unanswered scores each by Jazlynn Ellis (52'), Filippa Graneld (62') and Savina Zamborini (76').
"We wanted to make a statement," Hawai'i Hilo head coach Gene Okamura said. "It was just winning 1v1 battles around the field, being physically strong and willing to sacrifice and put their bodies on the line to help us get the result."
Hawai'i Hilo (13-1-3 overall, 9-1-1 PacWest) advances to Saturday's championship match against defending national champion Point Loma, who defeated Westmont earlier on Thursday.
