Baseball Falters as CUI Clinches Conference-Opening Series

Hawai‘i Hilo fell to Concordia University Irvine, 10-5 and 6-3.

HILO, Hawai'i – After splitting the first two games, Hawai'i Hilo Baseball was swept by Concordia University in a doubleheader, 10-5 and 6-3, Monday evening in Pacific West Conference action at Francis Wong Stadium.

While nearly half (47.9 percent) of CUI's batters were put down with three strikes on Monday, 16 free passes to first base were given out on walks and hit batsmen in contrast to just four for Vulcans batters. Five of the Golden Eagles' runs scored were initially put on base on balls with an additional two runs reaching on an error.

Mason Cook batted 5 for 5 on the afternoon, going 4 for 4 in the first game.

GAME 3: CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY IRVINE 10 - HAWAI'I HILO 5

  • CUI managed to get on the scoreboard early with a RBI single and RBI double from Michael Dixon II and Wyatt Madison, respectively, in the opening frame of the game for a 2-0 lead. The Golden Eagles then added on in the fourth innings with back-to-back doubles for a run followed by an RBI base hit to make it 4-0.
  • The Vulcans seemed primed to charge back in the bottom half of the inning, rallying on two outs. Trent Jackson and Mason Cook both singled before Vance Oshiro drove them in with a ground ball through the third baseman's legs. Chris Varljen then legged out a bunted ball as the throw to first was wild, allowing Oshiro to score to make it a one-run ballgame.
  • The Golden Eagles responded the next at-bat by once again being able to string hits together to put runners on, but this time, Hawai'i Hilo succumbed to two more runs with errant mistakes, pushing the CUI lead back out to 6-3. CUI seemingly put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh with a rinse and repeat of the scoring formula, putting together three hits for three runs as Devin Hayashi was able to leave the bases juiced with two strikeouts.
  • Hawai'i Hilo finished with just one less hit than CUI, even nearly doubling up on pitched strikeouts at 13-7, but Vulcans pitchers combined to give up eight free passes to batters while CUI allowed just one as Riley O'Sullivan got the win in 7.0 innings of work.
  • Nick Agacki was tagged with the loss after 6.1 innings with nine strikeouts but nine hits and four walks allowed.

GAME 4: CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY IRVINE 3 - HAWAI'I HILO 3 (7 INN.)

  • After a quick two innings of play. CUI managed to get on the scoreboard first as Owen Gott cashed in a two-RBI single set up by a reach-on-an-error and two walks to load the bases.
  • Hawai'i Hilo evened the score in the bottom of the fifth equally aided by a throwing error and back-to-back walks as Reece Kadota and Vance Oshiro both brought in runs on ground outs.
  • CUI threatened to re-take the lead in the next half inning with two singles to get runners on, but Ty Honda entered out the bullpen to sit down two batters in order to end the threat.
  • The wheels seemingly fell off in the top of the seventh after the Golden Eagles managed back-to-back hits to bring across the game-winning score. Two errors and a successful squeeze bunt later added three more runs to make it a four-run cushion for CUI.
  • Conor Meehan, who played for the Vulcans in 2022, entered to pitch the final inning for the Golden Eagles, managed consecutive strikeouts before Mason Cook and Reece Kadota teed off for back-to-back hits to plate a run, but it wouldn't be enough as CUI closed out the win and the series.
  • Starting pitcher Aaron Davies went 5.1 innings with a career-high eight strikeouts. The lefty gave up just four hits but surrendered three walks and two hit batsmen for two unearned runs.
