HILO, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Hilo Baseball and HPU flip-flopped scores for the second consecutive day as the Vulcans were victorious in Game 1 before falling to the Sharks in 7-6 ballgames Saturday afternoon at Francis Wong Stadium.
GAME 3: HPU 6 - HAWAI'I HILO 7
- Cody Min capped a 3-for-5 outing by slamming a first-pitch offering to right field to score Bradyn Yoshida from second base for the game-winning run in the eighth inning. Min also provided an earlier game-tying score in the fifth inning to make it 5-5.
- Alec Yamauchi also went 3 for 5 at the plate with three base hits before coming around to score each time in the second, fourth and seventh innings.
- Mark Fedro batted 2 for 3 in driving in three runs at three separate at-bats, including a sacrifice fly. Fedro provided RBIs for both the Vulcans' first score and the game-tying run in the seventh inning.
- Hawai'i Hilo again went pitch by committee using eight different pitchers as Christian Wood was tagged with his second win on the season. John Navarro came in to close once again, earning his fourth save.
- Kein Iwata collected four assists and two putouts with two turned double plays at shortstop. Iwata helped minimize damage in a two-run top of the fourth for the Sharks as he ended the inning by making a leaping snag on a hard-hit line drive above his head.
GAME 4: HPU 7 - HAWAI'I HILO 6 (7 INNINGS)
- Trent Jackson batted 3 for 3 and scored the Vulcans first run in the second inning on a base hit by Chris Varljen. Jackson drove in the next run an inning later for an RBI of his own.
- Nearing their final outs, the Vulcans rallied from three runs down and eventually tied the game at 6-6 on an infield base hit by Mark Fedro. The freshman hit a chopper into the 6-hole and was stopped on a diving effort by Sharks shortstop Tejean Smith, but the long-range throw bounced past the first baseman and out of play. Yamauchi scored from third and Jackson was initially awarded the go-ahead run before reverting back to third base to keep the score tied.
- HPU managed to plate the game-winning run in the top of the seventh with Frankie Peralez's RBI single to right field after two runners had previously gotten on base with free passes.
- Vance Oshiro batted 3 for 5 with two runs scored. He also recorded four assists and four putouts at second base. Fedro tallied up four putouts and three assists at third base. The Vulcans turned three double plays, making it five total on the day through Games 3 and 4.
- The Vulcans again used eight pitchers with Connor Dougal getting his first start of the season. Patrick Atkinson threw a scoreless inning after battling back from a tough start to the top of the fifth with a hit batsman and a walk. Atkinson then got a strikeout on a fouled bunt with two strikes before inducing a 6-4-3 double play to retire the side.
