HILO, Hawai'i – It was a big weekend of action for the Hawai'i Hilo Softball team, sweeping inter-island foes Chaminade and HPU, 4-0, to wrap up the regular season at home. In the process, the Vulcans qualified for the four-team Pacific West Conference Championship postseason tournament set for next week, May 1-3, at Dominican University's Penguin Field in San Rafael, California.
Hawai'i Hilo's efforts earned PacWest Conference Team of the Week honors as announced Monday by the conference office.
VULCANS VICTORIUS FOUR TIMES TO REACH POSTSEASON: The PacWest Team of the Week is the HAWAI'I HILO VULCANS. Coach Aisha Sueda's team swept island rivals HPU and Chaminade last weekend to clinch a Pacific West Conference tournament spot. The Vulcans are now 16-10 in conference play and 25-15 overall, with its regular season already in the books. The Vulcans have won 10 of their last 11 contests, dating back to March 29. This past weekend at home, Hilo won an extra-inning game against the Silverswords (3-2, 9 inn.) and another versus the Sharks (7-6, 8 inn.), and in the other two contests shut out their island opponent — beating Chaminade, 4-0, and HPU, 1-0. Madison Rabe tossed one of the those shutouts with a seven-inning three-hit effort.
With the wins, the Vulcans also secured the 2023-24 PacWest Hawai'i Challenge, a competition between the three Division II Hawai'i schools based on the results of head-to-head conference matchups in 10 sports throughout the school year.
