Baseball Splits with HPU

Hawai‘i Hilo Baseball defeated HPU, 5-3, before falling, 2-1.

HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Hilo Baseball split its second pair of weekend games on O'ahu with a 5-3 win and a 2-1 defeat to HPU in Pacific West Conference play Sunday afternoon at UH Manoa's Les Murakami Stadium.

Official Game 2 box score was not available at time of release.

GAME 1: HAWAI'I HILO 5 - HPU 3
  • Arthur Soto helped lead the Vulcans to victory in Game 1 with a 3-for-4 outing at the plate, driving in two runs and scoring one of his own. The first baseman got Hawai'i Hilo on the scoreboard in the opening frame with a base hit to bring Cody Min across the plate. Soto again singled in the third inning to score Min to make it a 3-1 ballgame.
  • In the top of the fifth, Soto added another base knock to load the bases for Alec Yamauchi's sacrifice fly to extend the Vulcans' lead.
  • HPU managed to make it a one-run game after a bases-loaded two-RBI single from Kota Suzuki, but that would be it as John Navarro closed out the final 2.0 innings for the save and the inter-island win.
GAME 2: HAWAI'I HILO 1- HPU 2
  • Aaron Davies provided another pitching gem, going 5.2 innings with six strikeouts. The fifth-year senior became the Vulcans' all-time Division II career leader in strikeouts at 158, surpassing Kekoa Lee's 157 total (08-11). Davies is also eight strikeouts away from tying Jordan Kurokawa's single-season mark of 68 set in 2015.
  • Nicholas Jio provided both runs for the Sharks, managing to hit RBI singles in the first and third innings.
  • Trent Jackson homered in the sixth inning to get a run back, but that would be it for the Vulcans.

UP NEXT

Hawai'i Hilo moved to 16-26 overall (9-19 PacWest) while HPU moved to a 11-13 conference record (20-17 overall). The two teams will meet up five more times in the final weekend of play, April 19-21, on the Big Island.

The Vulcans will host Chaminade for a doubleheader next Saturday, April 13, at Francis Wong Stadium starting at 2 p.m.

The four-team PacWest Conference Championship postseason tournament will be May 8-10 at Azusa Pacific's Cougar Baseball Complex.

PACWEST HAWAI'I CHALLENGE

Both the Vulcans and Sharks added two points each in the baseball race for the PacWest Hawai'i Challenge, putting all three teams at a tie for the time being.

In an effort to elevate Hawai'i-based rivalries, the PacWest Hawai'i Challenge has awarded the top school in athletics competition among the state's Division II institutions going back to the late 1970s.

Comprising 10 sports that all three schools participate in, points are awarded from head-to-head Pacific West Conference matchups as well as final placements at conference-ending championship events. The team with the highest total gets three points while the second highest gets two and the third-place finisher receives one.
