LOS ANGELES, California – The first official 90 minutes of the 2024 season were not enough to settle the score as Hawai'i Hilo Women's Soccer drew even with Cal State Los Angeles for a scoreless tie Saturday evening at CSULA's University Stadium.
On paper, it was a battle between evenly-matched foes among the best in the West Region as both teams were voted to finish No. 3 in their respective preseason conference coaches polls.
In the box score, both teams put up nearly even numbers with Vulcans goalkeeper Phoebe Barnes coming away with seven saves. On the other end, Hawai'i Hilo tallied eight shots on goal. Both Barnes and Golden Eagles' Taesja Paopao are also the reigning Pacific West Conference and California Collegiate Athletic Association Goalkeepers of the Year, respectively.
Saturday's result was Barnes' 14th career shutout.
