COSTA MESA, California – Hawai'i Hilo Baseball racked up double-digit hits but ultimately fell to Vanguard, 12-9, Friday afternoon in Pacific West Conference play at Dean Harvey Field to open a scheduled four-game series with the Lions.
It was the first road contest of the season for the Vulcans, as Cody Min got things started quickly with a solo homer in the top of the first inning. Vanguard managed five hits to take a five-run lead in the bottom of the second, but the Vulcans answered back in the next half-inning as Mark Fedro knocked in a two-RBI single to make it a one-run deficit. Fedro again drove in a run on a base hit in the top of the fourth as the Vulcans closed 3.5 innings of action with the score tied at 8-all.
The Lions managed to plate a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to jump back ahead before tacking on two more in the fifth as the Vulcans scored just one more time to reach the final arithmetic.
Min and Fedro each totaled three hits to contribute to the Vulcans final tally of 11. Vanguard managed to finish with 14 total hits.
Hawai'i Hilo moved to 3-10 in the PacWest (5-13 overall) as Vanguard moved to an 8-9 conference record (12-11 overall).
Game 2 of Friday's scheduled doubleheader was halted in the bottom of the fourth due to inclement weather with Vanguard leading, 6-3.
