Volleyball Rumbles Back to Beat Biola; Reinke New Assists Leader

LA MIRADA, California – Hawai'i Hilo Women's Volleyball rumbled back to take down Biola in four sets (16-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-19) Friday evening at the Chase Gymnasium.

The Eagles closed out the opening set after managing to quickly expand a one-score lead into an eight-point advantage. After evening the match at one set apiece, the Vulcans grabbed the reins of momentum and flipped a 23-20 deficit with five straight points to take the 2-1 advantage before wrapping the four-set win.

Senior setter Emerson Reinke finished with 34 assists but needed just nine of them to become the Vulcans new all-time career leader — surpassing both Sienna Davis (1992-1995) at 2,833 and Kendall Kott (2019-2022) at 2,835. The record-setting assist came in the second set on a kill by Malu Garcia for the 12th point.

Junior libero LC Nakagawa also reached a career milestone with 17 digs to reach career dig No. 1,000. The Academy of Art transfer now has 208 on the season after compiling 795 the past two seasons with the Urban Knights.

In Friday's match, Isabella Hadaller and Malu Garcia led with 12 kills apiece followed by 11 from Isabella Freeman who finished the match with a .688 attacking percentage on zero errors along with four total blocks.

Hawai'i Hilo was voted No. 4 in the Pacific West Conference Preseason Coaches Poll released earlier this week. The Vulcans finished 2024 in a four-way tie for fourth place. 2025 will feature the inaugural four-team PacWest Conference Championships postseason tournament hosted by Chaminade on O'ahu (Nov. 20-21).

INTER-ISLAND SHOWDOWN

Following the Vulcans' Oct. 4 match against Chaminade at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium, the University of Hawai'i at Manoa Men's Volleyball team will hold an intrasquad scrimmage. The team will also hold a photo session opportunity earlier in the day at Big Island Candies.
