HILO, Hawai'i – Braeden Mondeau drove in six runs to lead Hawai'i Hilo Baseball past Vanguard, 12-8, in the opener, but the visiting team answered to take the nightcap, 3-1, on Monday evening at the James "Jimmy" Correa Ballfield at Dr. Francis F.C. Wong Stadium.
Mondeau jump-started the Vulcans with a three-run double to left center in the first and added a three-run home run in the seventh to break a 4-4 tie. A five-run eighth put the game away despite Vanguard scoring thrice in the ninth.
In the nightcap, Brandon Bollerer held the Lions to three runs over six innings but Vanguard's two-run sixth was enough to even the four-game series at one apiece.
