CALIFORNIA – Hawai'i Hilo Baseball freshman Blake Saucedo was selected as Pacific West Conference Pitcher of the Week after tossing a nine-inning complete-game shutout against HPU this past weekend in the Vulcans' regular-season series finale at the James "Jimmy" Correa Ballfield at Dr. Francis F.C. Wong Stadium in Hilo.
Fresno Pacific's Titus Wheelock was selected as Player of the Week after helping the Sunbirds lock up a postseason tournament berth by batting 9 for 13 with 15 RBI and four home runs.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Saucedo made his second consecutive start in his 10th appearance on the mound this season going the whole distance of 9.0 innings with no runs allowed in a 3-0 win over HPU last Friday to open the four-game series. The freshman surrendered just six hits, two walks and four hit batsmen while tallying up seven strikeouts along with two putouts and one assist. It was the third shutout of the season by the Vulcans — only one to go nine innings — and only the fourth time this season the Sharks had been kept off the scoreboard.
Hawai'i Hilo also claimed victory in Friday's Game 2 for the doubleheader sweep to help eliminate HPU from qualifying for the four-team PacWest Championships postseason tournament. Vulcans ended their season at 18-29 overall with a 17-25 record in PacWest play to finish No. 9 in the conference.
