"The coaching staff was unlike any other I'd played under. They looked at us as people first, then soccer players, and that made all the difference in how we played as a team on the field and the relationships we built off the field."

"The unwavering belief and support from Coach Gene and the coaching staff inspired me to push myself and reignited my love for the game. Their guidance and the incredible team environment helped me grow not just on the field, but in every aspect of my life, and for that, I will forever be grateful."

A Winning Program

"In 2021 we won the PacWest conference for the first time in program history. Since then, we have established Hilo as a program that competes for the PacWest title every year and is consistently ranked as one of the top programs in the West Region and the country. It's been amazing to see how Gene has transformed this program from a participation team into a championship-winning one."

"This athletic program stands out because it is a competitive environment, and no spot is solidified. You have to continue proving yourself each day or your spot could be taken. The coaches care about developing you as a player and want you to be the best version of yourself on and off the field."

"This team is a family, and that's a large part of why we succeeded in the way that we did. We pushed through tough practices and games because we wanted to support each other and win for each other. This team and the coaches have changed how so many girls view soccer because of their past college experiences. I've seen teammates come in who considered quitting soccer, but went on to win the PacWest with us and find a new love for the sport. We all have one goal, and that is to win for our family."

"To me, Vulcan athletics primarily stands out for its close-knit community. The athletics program at Hilo truly is one big ohana, where you're valued for who you are rather than what you do. Having moved far from home to attend college, this support system has been extremely valuable for me."

"My most memorable experience was my senior night, celebrating the accomplishments and development this program has experienced alongside the people who made my time at Hilo so special."

"It can be scary moving to a place you've never been, all the way across the ocean. But when I hopped on the phone with the head coach, he asked, 'Have you ever had a papaya?' Not a single other college coach chose to engage in conversation with me not related to soccer. I felt seen by the program as a person too. This athletic program stands out because of the equality of support for sports no matter what. All women's and men's sports are supported equally. I have never felt more supported by a community for sports either. We give back to the community as well. We are so involved with each other, and it felt healing to my inner child knowing that we get to meet kids who dream of playing college soccer every day."

"My most memorable memories weren't even on the field. They were everything in between: going to the beach with my friends, mini golfing and playing arcade games on team trips, binge watching reality TV, team dinners, and so on. Of course I remember our big wins and crying tears of joy, but everything in between stays with me."

"Gene helped me find an apartment that happened to look right over the soccer field, and paired me with another new transfer who now is and forever will be a lifelong friend. I booked a one-way ticket without touring the campus or meeting the coaching staff in person."

"Senior day truly was something special. All of us seniors felt so loved and appreciated! Hilo really knows how to celebrate their players."

Home Away From Home

"If someone is unsure about committing to the program, I would say to take the leap of faith. For those who live on the mainland or even in a different country, being so far away from home can be hard. The idea of being on an island can be intimidating, but the program is founded on ohana. The program and Hilo Athletics do everything they can to ensure every athlete feels supported and loved. Your teammates and coaching staff will help you in any way they can. I never felt out of place. I just felt like I was at my home away from home with my second family."

"I wanted to be challenged both personally and as a soccer player. For me, that looked like moving 4,000 miles away to a small island in the middle of the ocean, and I would make that same decision again, every day of the week."

"Whenever school felt challenging or homesickness crept in, a quick five-minute drive to Honoli'i Beach always lifted my spirits. Embrace everyone you meet and take every opportunity to explore the island, and you'll make lifelong friends and create memories you will cherish forever."

From D1 to D2: What Transfers Should Actually Expect

"Going from D1 to D2 was an unsure process. I thought it would be 'easier' and less intense. However, I was wrong. The competitiveness felt more present, yet the team chemistry was 10x better. Picking Hilo was the best decision I have ever made."

"So many players think transferring up to a D1 school will prove more about your play or bring you more happiness, but there is so much more to life than that. Being part of the PacWest and West Region, you get exposed to incredibly high-level soccer and challenging competition while playing for a top-tier women's soccer program."

"After undergoing several injuries and three head-coaching changes at my old school, I wanted to pursue a healthier and happier environment. My mindset towards playing and any love I had for soccer had strayed so far that I felt it was nearly impossible to get it back. This program proved me wrong in every aspect. Hilo balances joy and competitiveness, which ultimately ignites a fire within to play as hard as possible every day. The laughs, memories, and friendships that were created healed any wounds I had both on and off the field."

"My overall experience with the program was amazing, period. I met my best friends, found new mentors, and played the game I always loved as it should be played.

Transferring was scary. It can be intimidating moving to a place you've never been, all the way across the ocean. But when I got on the phone with the head coach, in the middle of our conversation he asked, 'Have you ever had a papaya?' Not a single other college coach had talked to me about anything besides soccer. I felt seen by the program as a person, not just a player.

My team at Hilo was the closest group of people I've ever been around. Not only were we teammates, we were friends too. There were no cliques. I'd lost a lot of love for the game and confidence at my first school, and the culture at Hilo truly saved me from quitting soccer altogether. I got myself back here.

If I could do it all again, I would in a heartbeat."

"After finishing my undergrad, I still had my COVID 5th year to use, and choosing to finish my career at UH Hilo was easily the best decision I could have ever made. The coaching staff was unlike any other I'd played under. They looked at us as people first, then soccer players, and that made all the difference in how we played as a team.

I actually turned down Gene's first offer, unsure if I wanted to try playing overseas instead. When he called a second time, it was the easiest yes of my life. He helped me find an apartment that looked right over the soccer field and paired me with another new transfer who is now a lifelong friend. I booked a one-way ticket without ever touring campus or meeting the coaches in person, and it turned out to be the best choice I ever made.

As soon as I got on campus, Hilo felt like home. Between waterfalls, hiking, stargazing on Mauna Kea, sunrise at Honoli'i, and becoming conference champions and reaching the NCAA tournament second round for the first time in program history, there was no shortage of memories. Coming from a successful D2 program in Michigan, I can say the level of play at Hilo was that much better, and the culture is unmatched."

2021 PacWest Conference Newcomer of the Year, 2023-24 & 2024-25 Sakai and Harue Wakakuwa Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year

"I truly could not have wished or dreamed of a better college experience. Hilo is such a special place for many reasons: Gene has created a team with not only great soccer players but more importantly great people, the small class sizes at UH Hilo allow for close relationships with professors who go above and beyond, and the natural beauty of the Big Island allows for free time that's meaningful and intentional.

Entering the transfer portal after my freshman year, I wasn't sure if I wanted to continue playing soccer or even continue going to college. I reached out to Coach Gene, and our conversations ultimately led to my decision to come to Hilo. The transition was much easier than expected. Many of the girls were transfers too, and we were all welcomed with open arms by the coaching staff and team.

To me, Vulcan athletics stands out for its close-knit community. The athletics program at Hilo truly is one big ohana, where you're valued for who you are rather than what you do. What's most unique about the team here is that it's found a balance between being extremely competitive while also celebrating each other's successes.

The most rewarding part has been watching the program grow. In 2021 we won the PacWest conference for the first time in program history, to many people's surprise. Since then, we've established Hilo as a program that competes for the title every year and is consistently ranked among the top programs in the West Region and the country.

If given the opportunity to do it all again? Yes. I could not have imagined a college experience more impactful and enjoyable than the one I had at Hilo."
