Veteran soccer player and coach Greg Cryns joins the UH Hilo Vulcan family in 2019 as a volunteer assistant coach.
A "C" licensed coach, Cryns has experience as a coach at the collegiate, high school and club levels. Most recently, he has coached with the Hawai`i Surf Soccer Club.
Cryns' background also includes assistant coach stints at San Diego City College and Neosho County CC. He coached the Guerin Prep High School team (Ill.) as the interim head coach in 2010.
An Illinois native, Cryns played soccer at Division I Northern Illinois, starting as a freshman. After injuries took their toll, he moved into a strength and conditioning focus, working with the Northern Illinois football program while earning his undergraduate degree. He then gained a master's degree in Health and Human Performance from Pittsburg State.
Cryns also interned in the San Diego State Strength and Conditioning department, working with football and men's soccer.
A product of a large family (four brothers, two sisters), Cryns was the high school area player of the year in 2001, setting a school mark with 32 goals scored.
