Callen Perreira

The 2021 UH Hilo softball season will be the 25th for head coach Callen Perreira, who has over 800 collegiate victories in 29 total years of coaching.
 
With 675 career wins on the UH Hilo bench (675-409-3), Perreira was the Vulcans’ head coach from 1990-2009 and began his second stint in 2017.  He had 17 consecutive winning seasons with the Vulcans from 1991-2007. He led his 2004 and 2005 teams to Pacific West Conference championships. His teams also made appearances in the NCAA Division II West Regional tournament in 2005 and 2007.

In between, he coached for four seasons (2012-15) at the College of Southern Nevada, compiling a 136-104 record. In 2014, the Coyotes had 40 wins and were ranked No. 2 in the national rankings. Perreira also coached for one season (2016) at Silverado High School in Las Vegas.

At UH Hilo, the Vulcans were ranked as high as 11th in the nation in the 2007 DII poll and were consistently ranked in the West Region Top 10.  During his first tenure, Perreira produced 51 Academic All-Americans, four All-Americans and led UH Hilo to a fourth place finish at the 1992 NAIA Softball World Series.

Perreira's 2018 and 2019 teams just missed qualifying for the NCAA playoffs. In 2019, the Vulcans were 24-11 in the PacWest, finishing in second place. 
 
With a career record of 811-513-3, Perreira is a member of the Easton 800 Victory Club.  He is also a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA), has served as the Pacific West Conference Representative to the NFCA in 2008 and 2009 and is currently a member of the NCAA Division II West Region Advisory Committee.

Before entering the collegiate ranks, Perreira’s coaching career began at Hilo High School, where he was head softball coach from 1978-1987.  He compiled a 161-32 (.834) record, winning eight consecutive league championships and Hilo High’s only state softball title.

Perreira is a Hilo native who also now has a home in Henderson, Nev. He graduated with a Recreation Administration degree from the University of Hawai`i, and is a US Navy veteran and Coast Guard Reserve.
