Returning to the Vulcan softball coaching staff in 2017 is Les Oliveira, reuniting with head coach Callan Perreira.
Oliveira was on the UHH bench from 1995 to 2007, working with then-head coach Perreira for 14 seasons. UHH went 576-345 during that span, winning a pair of conference championships and had three NCAA Division II west region tournament appearances.
Oliveira worked with the Vulcan catchers, outfielders and instructed hitting.
The Vietnam veteran worked for the State of Hawai'i for nearly 30 years as a counselor and therapist.Â
A Hilo High School graduate, Oliveira helped lead the Vikings to the BIIF championship in 1964, hitting .445. He played at UHH from 1964-66, hitting .375 over that span. He then transferred to St. Martin's University (Lacey, Wash.), batting .495 in 1967.
He graduated from St. Martin's in 1968 and received his master's in education from the University of Hawai'i Monoa in 1998.
