Former Vulcan player Basia Sauni joined the Vulcans as an assistant coach in 2019. In 2021, she begins her third season as a UHH assistant coach after finishing her playing career in 2018.
Sauni played two seasons as a standout setter for UH Hilo (2017 and 2018), after transferring from Scottsdale Community College. She was a Second-Team NJCAA All-American at Scottsdale, and earned honorable mention All-PacWest honors as a senior for the Vulcans. In 2018, she helped lead the Vulcans to a 21-7 record.
The Laie, Hawai`i native, voted Most Pono Vulcan by her teammates, graduated from UH Hilo in 2019 with a degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science. She and UHH baseball player Kobie Russell are the proud parents of Malosi, born in October of 2019.Â
